Salam, everyone!
My name is Sara, and I’m a recent graduate of The University of Texas at Austin. My family is of Indian descent, but my parents and grandparents all lived and grew up largely in East Africa, and I was born in Toronto, Canada. I lived in the Ivory Coast for a few years and spent high school and college in Texas. This mix of experiences and cultures has made me intellectually curious about the process of identity-formation, particularly in Muslim communities. I’m interested in family law reform movements in the Middle East as well as in “Western” perceptions of family law, and, on a somewhat-related note, I’m interested in the carving of queer spaces throughout the Middle East and the effects of these spaces on interpretations of the Qur’an.
I’ve been writing and blogging for various independent media outlets for a few years now, and I’m excited to be joining the MMW community as a writer. I hope I’ll be able to contribute to an already-thriving forum for discussion.
Cheers!
