Things to Know About!

Manal Al-Sharif, Saudi women’s rights activist who helped start a driving campaign featuring women in 2011.

  • The Supreme Court of India recently struck down “triple talaq,” which  allowed a Muslim man to dissolve his marriage by uttering the term divorce three times, all at once. While some see this as a positive move in women’s rights,  some writers question if this is enough address some of  the gender inequalities Muslim women experience in India.
  • In the US Muslim women are less likely to undergo breast cancer screenings. Is there a role for mosques in promoting the practice?
  • Saudi Arabia has ended its ban on women driving in the country. However, some say this is just a public relations stunt to appease criticisms of the Saudi government and its stands on women’s rights.
  • The Prime Minister of Cambodia Hun Sen is calling private sector employers to allow Muslim women to dress in “modest” clothing and wear hijabs at work, if they wish to do so. The hope is that accommodating the clothing needs of Muslim women in the workplace will remove some employment barriers for them.
