Dear Readers
Wishing you all the peace and blessings of the Universe.
This is my very first post on Muslimah Media Watch.
I am a proudly South African Muslimah, named Safiyyah. I am currently pursuing my undergraduate degree in Islamic Studies and Arabic at final year, not to mention chasing a career in developmental journalism. Life is pretty exciting at the moment; as a believer, student, wife and writer, I have plenty to fill my days. Like many others I am striving to balance it all, and still contribute positively, which sometimes proves challenging.
Being given the opportunity to contribute to MMW is invaluable to me, both on a personal as well as a professional level. I look forward to many healthy and thought provoking discussions with you all.
I am strong advocate of the “equal but different” gender theory. An anonymous writer said it well, when she said, “A woman who aims to be equal to man, has aimed far too low.” I hope to represent, through my postings, the real face of Muslim women, regardless of sect, class, ideology or race. Through my travels, far and wide, I have had the opportunity to meet and mingle with many many different Muslimahs. Through those experiences, I have learnt that we Muslim women are certainly not the homogeneous type. We need to tell our stories, and stop letting them be told for us.
Here’s to happy critiquing.
